Perfect weather during flowering gifted us with bigger yields this year, but that doesn’t seem to have dented the quality here at Huia. The grapes ripened gracefully and are now safely tucked away in the winery, where each morning we’re greeted by the vivid aromas Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is known for. I’m quietly excited about the wines this year and can’t wait to see them in bottle.

The 2023 season brought a cooler, wetter start, but a long, dry autumn allowed fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. At Huia, this meant clean, vibrant fruit and a calm, measured harvest. The resulting Sauvignon Blanc is layered and expressive—floral and mineral with notes of ripe apple and subtle hazelnut from partial oak fermentation. Certified organic and made with indigenous yeast, it’s a beautifully nuanced take on Marlborough’s signature variety.

The 2022 season brought a cooler, wetter spring to Marlborough, resulting in higher yields but also greater pressure in the vineyard. It was a vintage that demanded attention—particularly around harvest timing—but those who navigated it well saw beautifully expressive wines. At Huia, our organic practices helped maintain balance and vitality in the fruit. The resulting Sauvignon Blanc is bright and aromatic, with notes of guava, gooseberry and white peach, balanced by crisp acidity and a clean mineral finish. A vibrant, true-to-place wine from a season that kept us on our toes.

The 2021 vintage was one of the smallest in Marlborough’s recent history, but also one of the finest. A cool, dry growing season followed by settled ripening conditions produced intensely flavoured, beautifully balanced fruit. At Huia, the Sauvignon Blanc from this vintage is notably elegant—vibrant and lifted, with concentrated citrus and tropical notes, finely layered texture, and a mineral spine. While yields were well below average, the quality is exceptional—proof that less can truly be more.
